Extended OutreachTrips in mission with more distant neighbors are sponsored throughout the year. Each fall we sponsor a team of adults to Red Bird Mission in the Appalachians of eastern Kentucky to work among the mountain folk repairing homes. Red Bird is the primary United Methodist outreach program to Appalachia. It is part of the Red Bird Missionary Conference of the UMC. In spring students are also encouraged to form a team to go during school break.
There are many opportunities to travel as a team to disaster recovery sites helping people rebuild their lives after floods, hurricanes and tornadoes. Such work provides tangible help cleaning out or rebuilding homes, and emotional help in dealing with loss. Spirits are lifted greatly when people can see their home transformed from a wrecked shell to safe and secure living space again. You don't have to be a skilled carpenter to make a huge difference in someone's life, sometimes just by listening and being present. Ask how you might be there and be hope for those who struggle to rebuild after disaster. If you can't travel, you can pray and you can give.
